About the Author
I am an avid reader. You might say an extremely passionate reader. FMark E Leinor as long as I can remember, I read. Whether it was historic America or Europe, Narnia, Middle Earth, or the Four Lands of Shannara, I spent hours of each day of my childhood in the worlds authors had created.
Charles Dickens, Mark Twain, Louisa May Alcott, James Fenimore Cooper, Robert Louis Stevenson, Laura Ingalls Wilder and Arthur Conan Doyle were as influential in my life as Louie L’Amour, C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, Terry Brooks, Timothy Zahn, Isaac Asimov and Dr. Seuss. Continue reading

Author Spotlight: Elle Jacklee, writer of Children’s & Young Adult Fantasy

The Paranormal, Fantasy, Dystopia and Romance Writers and Reviewers Group Featured Author 10th December 2013

About the author
Elle Jacklee 1
My mantra is “Life is short.” I believe in making every moment count. Purple is my favorite color. I think black cats are good luck. My professional titles have included software programmer, inside sales rep, and bilingual customer service rep. But my favorite titles are mother, wife, and author.

I’m the author of the Tree of Mindala, a middle grade fantasy. It’s the first in my Wunderwood series.
My love of reading began with classics such as L. Frank Baum’s Oz books and C.S. Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia. The endless hours of enjoyment that they, and countless others, gave me sparked my passion for writing. I hope that my stories will help instill in children a lifelong love of reading as well as the knowledge that imagination has no limits.

I am currently working on the second installment of the Wunderwood series. I live in Wisconsin with my husband and two young sons, none of whom are in a hurry to grow up. And that’s just fine with me!

The Book
The Tree of Mindala; Wunderwood Book One
Elle Jacklee, The Tree of MindalaMiranda Moon’s vivid imagination has gotten her into trouble more times than she can count. This time, she’s been suspended from school. So her straight-laced younger brother, Marcus, blames her when they’re relegated to their late grandparents’ old cabin over Halloween weekend. But when Miranda finds a curious trinket, they’re mysteriously whisked away to Wunderwood, where magic flows through the trees and everyone already knows their family name. A place even Miranda never imagined.

Just as they arrive, a sinister warlock, Thornton Crow, is freed from a long banishment. He resumes his deadly agenda to find The Tree of Mindala, the source of all the realm’s magic. As Miranda and Marcus discover branches of their own family tree that they hadn’t even known existed, they learn that Thornton has a score to settle with anyone in their bloodline. Especially them… Though justice has always had a way of being naturally restored in Wunderwood, Thornton’s latest evil deed just may be the tipping point.

When Miranda discovers her own role in Thornton’s release, she knows it’s up to her to stop him from stealing not just magic, but also hope. With travel companions that could as easily be foes as friends, and only the cryptic words of a prophecy to guide her, Miranda must decide if she can carry out the task that will either save Wunderwood… or doom it forever.

Author Spotlight 2nd October 2013

Author Spotlight: Margo Bond Collins, writer of Paranormal, Fantasy & Mystery

The Paranormal, Fantasy, Dystopia and Romance Writers and Reviewers Group Featured Author 2nd October 2013

About the Author

I’ve always wanted to write. For Margo Bond Collinsas long as I can remember, I have made up stories. When I’m driving (which I find immensely dull), I amuse myself by making up characters and figuring out ways to make their lives difficult. The first clear memory I have of writing a story is of writing what would now be considered fan fiction—it was a story set in the world of The Wizard of Oz, and I wrote it out on a yellow legal pad.

So I’ve pretty much always written. But about ten years ago, a friend suggested I join in National Novel Writing Month (nanowrimo.org). Until then, I had always written short stories. That year, I finished the first draft of what would eventually become Legally Undead. I’ve been addicted to novel writing ever since!

Margo Bond Collins lives in Texas with her husband, their daughter, several spoiled cats, and a ridiculous turtle. She teaches college-level English courses online, though writing fiction is her first love. She enjoys reading urban fantasy and paranormal fiction of any genre and spends most of her free time daydreaming about vampires, ghosts, zombies, werewolves, and other monsters. Waking Up Dead is her first published novel. Her second novel, Legally Undead, is an urban fantasy, forthcoming in 2014 from World Weaver Press.

Excerpt
When I died, I expected to go to heaven.
Okay. Maybe hell. It’s not like I was perfect or anything. But I was sort of hoping for heaven.
Instead, I went to Alabama.
Yeah. I know. It’s weird.
I died in Dallas, my hometown. I was killed, actually. Murdered. I’ll spare you the gruesome details. I don’t like to remember them myself. Some jerk with a knife–and probably a Bad-Mommy complex. Believe me, if I knew where he was, I’d go haunt his ass.
At any rate, by the time death came, I was ready for it–ready to stop hurting, ready to let go. I didn’t even fight it.
And then I woke up dead in Alabama. Talk about pissed off.
You know, even reincarnation would have been fine with me–I could have started over, clean slate and all that. Human, cow, bug. Whatever. But no. I ended up haunting someplace I’d never even been.
That’s not the way it’s supposed to work, right? Ghosts are supposed to be the tortured spirits of those who cannot let go of their earthly existence. If they could be convinced to follow the light, they’d leave behind said earthly existence and quit scaring the bejesus out of the poor folks who run across them. That’s what all those “ghost hunter” shows on television tell us.
Let me tell you something. The living don’t know jack about the dead.
Not this dead chick, anyway.

About the Author
Frog and Esther JFrog and Esther Jonesones are a husband and wife fantasy writing team who live in Eastern Washington. We got started on this crazy path back in 2011, and we’ve been working hard at our second full-time job ever since.  You can see that we have a novel out from the big ad over to the right. When, we tried promoting that novel, and found that what we really did well was review other novels.  That started this project, the Friday Indie Review.  We’ll still be posting our own books, of course, and we’ll keep on writing, but we also want to be a gateway for readers to find good, solid indie books.

The Books:
Grace Under Fire (The Gift of Grace #1)
Grace Under Fire (The Gift of Grace #1) Frog JonesGrace Moore doesn’t think her life can get any more complicated. After all, she’s already an operative for an organization of underground magic-users known as the Grove.

Hated by the public and hunted by police because of their magic, Grace knows she’ll be imprisoned or executed if anyone on the outside discovers her real job. With her impulsive nature and zany fashion sense, she has her hands full just keeping under the radar. And that’s before something mysteriously kills all the members at the organization’s Spokane headquarters.

Chosen, in her opinion, as an expendable way for her superiors to save face with other Grove branches, Grace sets out to find who or what could kill a group of people even more talented than herself. She’d much rather be home, eating a steaming plate of four star Phad Thai, with a dusty tome of rune descriptions open in front of her. Instead she’s in over her head, and alone on scene of the most public hit against the Grove system in generations.

If Grace has any chance of completing her mission and living through this, she must team up with Robert Lorents– a powerfully talented, but untrained and untrusting, foster kid with a genius for trouble. That’s assuming, of course, that she can convince Robert she’s not evil, evade the police investigation, and come up with a plan before she and Robert become the next victims.
